This lesson we went through the Waves test and had an introduction to the EM Spectrum. We watched a video on the various parts and looked at a demo of the whole spectrum.
Prep: Physics for You, P239, Q24 and Q25. These should address some of the common mistakes from the test. All must be able to state uses of radio waves (C Grade)
Most should be able to relate the properties of a radio wave to its uses (B Grade) Some could be able to explain refraction of radio waves (A/A* Grade) Today we looked at the use of EM waves in communications particularly radio waves and microwaves, comparing how the two are used. We modelled diffraction of radio and microwaves outside to investigate why Issy's radio worked in a valley by Jay's phone didn't and linked diffraction and refraction to the use of satellites. Prep: finish your poster on the EM spectrum and its uses. Due Tuesday Aim: to make a poster on the EM Spectrum
All must be able to state the constituents of the EM Spectrum (C Grade) Most should be able to describe the EM field that makes up light (B Grade) Some could be able to relate uses of the EM spectrum to their properties (A/A* Grade) Today we looked at an overview of the electromagnetic spectrum using devices set up in the classroom: a radio, TV, mobile phone, microwave, heat lamp, light filters, UV lamp and an X-ray of a broken knee cap. You then carried out research to begin to make a poster about the EM spectrum and its uses using info sheets placed around the room, a table of wavelength and frequencies for the EM spectrum and your Physics for You books. Don't forget: Physics for You homework due in tomorrow! This week's homework: Finish your EM spectrum poster by next Tuesday. Today we had a test on waves and then you showed off your knowledge with the envelope game on Waves Keywords. Congratulations to Rutherford who stormed ahead and one with a round in hand.
Today we revised electricity by writing a crib sheet: 8 things I need to know about electricity.
These included: 1) The circuit symbols 2) Current and voltage in a series circuit 3) Current and voltage in a parallel circuit 4) Current-p.d. graphs for resistors, bulbs and diodes 5) Definitions for voltage, current and resistance 6) Common experimental errors 7) The difference between conventional current and electron flow 8) Adding resistors in series Today we looked at Ultrasound and its uses.
All must be able to define ultrasound (C Grade) Most should be able to describe how ultrasound is used in medicine (B Grade) Some could be able to use the wave equation to interpret ultrasound scans (A/A* Grade) We watched a video on how it works and made notes on its uses including some excellent drawings of some beautiful babies in utero. We answered questions 2 and 3 of the Sound and Ultrasound Questions Remember: there is a test on Sound and Wave Properties on Friday! Today we went through the Sound and Wave Properties test and began looking at the EM Spectrum
We watch an introductory video and made notes on what an electromagnetic wave was. Prep: Physics for you P 239 Q24 and 25 Website coming soon.
