Heat Transfer Exam Question
In an exam you might be asked to write an extended explanation question.
Have a look at the thermos. It stops whatever you put inside it, tea, for example, from cooling down. It does that by reducing heat transfer from the inside to the outside.
Use the following questions to plan your answer to the exam question:
1) What is conduction?
2) How does the vacuum between the two walls reduce conduction?
3) How does the rubber stopper reduce conduction?
4) What is convection?
5) How does the vacuum between the two walls reduce convection?
6) What is radiation?
7) Why are the internal walls silver?
Now use your notes to answer the following question. Try to write your answer in an ordered paragraph. Explain your answer as clearly as possible.
How does a thermos reduce heat loss? Include a description of the three types of heat transfer in your answer. Answers will be assessed for their quality of written communication. [6 marks]
